Question Login start problem

Hi:

After years of no problems with my Ubuntu 12.04, today my laptop began experiencing the following problem. When I get to the login screen, it apparently freezes. Regardless, I type my password and hit Enter. Nothing happens. I wait like a couple of minutes, and suddenly the password shows in the box (I mean, the dots representing the password) and the machine resumes the login process and operates normally. How do I troubleshoot this problem? Your help is appreciated.

Here's some info about my machine:

Code:
williepabon@williepabon-VGN-N130G:~$ uname -a

Could it be a bug? Try restarting login manager service.

This sounds interesting.

I think I would start by installing a different DM. Anyone of them you may fancy.

Purge the current and install the new one. See if that makes a difference.

Then reverse the process and go back to the original (lightdm?).

Have had some problems with lightdm at times. Has it been upgraded lately in 12.04? Seems to have problems when new "improvements" are added but generally they straighten out with another package upgrade fairly soon.

Not experiencing any problems currently with it under Wheezy.
Code:
Linux debian 3.2.0-4-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 3.2.57-3 i686 GNU/Linux
This is running with Xfce4.8 on an ancient Dell Latitude. No wifi but does have both a DSL port and a dial up port built in. Interesting old contraption.

If you use the "Post Reply" or "Quote" button instead of the "Quick Reply" option you can use the # icon on the tool bar to wrap your output in code tags. This makes both posting and reading the post easier.

You can also use the square brackets; [] to wrap around the word "code" before you paste the output content and then use the [] to wrap "/code" at the end of the pasted content.

This works with "quote" and "/quote" too. This works on all forums that use bulletin board code (all I have ever seen use that) and is greatly appreciated by people reading the posts.

I find typing the things is faster and it works in the Quick Reply option too.

I really not sure how to restart login manager service in Ubuntu. Anyway, what's your login manager? Is it lightdm? You can Google how to do it or try this. [Not sure about following. The best way is Google it.]

Code:
sudo stop lightdm && start lightdm

please use code tags.

i coudn't find the 5min delay in your xorg.0.log, so it must be happening before xsession starts.
but something about the graphic driver setup there looks fishy.

hmmm.

please search the web on problems with linux and your particular graphic card (the line with "VGA" in your lspci output).

you have a sony vaio laptop?
you might want to search that, too. i remember there were problems with those & linux.

when you decide to post again here, we need much more info about your general setup (distro, hardware...)
check the link in my signature.

Exclamation Login start problem

ondoho:

Sorry that I didn't include the Model name and manufacturer of my laptop on my original post (yes, it is an old Sony Vaio). At that moment, I didn't consider it important to my problem. The other information (OS distro, version, etc), I understand I did provide. As I said on my original, after the "glitch" on the boot up sequence, the laptop operates normally, no video or audio problems that I am aware of. The other information about the hardware, I think, was provided by running the commands you requested. Yes, I searched the Internet and asked in other Linux forums about this problem, too. Still waiting for answers. Up to now, this problem, as you may deduce, is not disabling the laptop, the machine functions, but it is a nuisance. I don't have any technical expertise on the internals of the Linux OS (init, boot sequence, GRUB, etc.) so, I depend on the people that do have that knowledge, and are willing to help and share. That's why I'm posting on this forum. Thanks.

true, it says ubuntu in your first post.

it seems you have been running into problems with your vaio's graphic card before:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...er-4175463998/
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2149759

i don't understand how you could fail to mention that, after i wrote it might be a graphics card/driver related issue.

i also don't understand how you could fail to use code tags for a long xorg log file.
for someone who's been posting for 7 years on more than 1 forum, this is inexcusable.

what else did you fail to mention?

For the problem you had last year - look at the second code block in your first post. "NV-GLX" is part of the nvidia closed source driver - so it's obvious that, despite not having an nvidia GPU, you installed that driver at some point.

If glxinfo is still giving the same error then you still have the same problem:
Code:
$ glxinfo | grep render
Considering the amount of time you've been at this and your current level of expertise, you might consider cutting your losses, backing up your files and reinstalling from scratch.
