live cd doesn't even begin to start

hello

i've just downloaded the Ubuntu 5.04 live cd amd64.
strangely enough, what was supposed to be an .iso file, was regarded by my computer (windows xp) as a .rar file.
still, i have unpacked it and copied onto a cd.

however, after the reboot, windows start just the way they used to before

please, help me.

ps. i have tried the knoppix 3.8 live cd and it worked very well, so i don't think it's a bios question.

Hello,

From which site did you download the iso? On http://mir1.ovh.net/ubuntu/releases/5.04/ I only see .iso files.

You're not supposed to unpack the .iso file, just burn it, as explained on http://www.linuxiso.org/viewdoc.php/howtoburn.html

Have a lot of fun

you're right, very stupid of me, sorry.
i failed to notice you have to make nero show "image files (*.nrg, *.iso, *.cue)" instead of "all nero compilations and images". and because i couldn't see the file, i thought i had to unpack it... well... it's really good that being stupid doesn't kill instantly

now ubuntu starts very well

but actually, there's another problem...
after i came back to windows, it couldn't see the network card and the printer drivers i managed to get over it by rebooting it and rebooting once again during the windows start-up, and than choosing to "run the last good configuration", but i can't resist the feeling this is not quite the way it should be...
another point is that the sound card didn't work under ubuntu. but this isn't not really important.
