Kernel Update will not Boot
Hi,
I just updated to 6.10's new kernel 2.6.17 on Ubuntu's updater. It required a restart and when I did it will not load. All I get is a screen saying starting to boot or some thing to that effect, then it hangs. Has anybody got any ideas on how to fix this.
Thanks
Frank

Did you save your old kernel? If so, you should be able to just edit grub to allow booting the old kernel.

Hi,
Could not find the old kernel in Grub which I assume is on the MBR where I loaded it. I am duel booting and cannot access Ubuntu on HDB.

1) Boot with your Ubuntu CD (should be a live CD too).
2) Mount your hard drive somewhere, like /mnt/ubuntu.
3) chroot /mnt/ubuntu (or wherever you mounted it) -- this should make you root user on your hard drive installed Ubuntu
4) cd /boot -- look for your old kernel in here.
5) If it's here, then add it to /boot/grub/menu.lst by hand.
6) If it's not there, try installing a kernel from the repositories (aptitude install linux-image-blahblah), then add it to /boot/grub/menu.lst by hand.
7) Type "exit" to get out of the chroot and reboot. You should now have a new menu item to choose from in grub.

pljvaldez,
I was able to access Hdb with a Knoppix Cd, the kernel listed is 2.6.17-10 which is suppose to be the generic. Not sure what to do now. All I know is there was an update today that I installed and I cannot figure out what happened. Any more suggestions before I do a reinstall?
Thanks
Frank

The upgrade was to 2.6.17-10.34 from .33. It would appear that our last Linux image was replaced since it was such a low level upgrade. For more major upgrade the older versions are keep in on the disk. My upgrade worked fine and when I checked the .33 doesn't seem to be there anymore.

I found the following on the Ubuntu forums that sheds some light on your problem. Apparent there is a particular version of the Nvidia driver not from the Ubuntu repositories that has the problem.
