KDE not starting in graphic mode, why?

Hi,

First of all: Merry Christmas, a very good end of 2007 and an excellent begin of 2008.

Kubuntu_7.10 running on a Dell Latittude C840.
Till yesterday everything worked perfectly.
After starting this morning Kubuntu is starting as normal with the text message "Starting K Display manager" and then text lines to indicate what's started.
When everything was ok I could only view two or three lines with messages as: "starting .... OK" after the message:
Now al lot more lines appear and then the screen goes blank (black) and a new set of text lines appears.
Starting up
Loading, please wait....
Kinit: name_to_dev_t(Intenational_telephone_numer_style_path_to_a_location_on_disk) = sda5(8,5)
Kinit: Trying to resume from /dev/disk/by-uuid/same_path_as_above)
Kinit: No resume image, doing normal boot....
Ubuntu 7.10 PC_name tty1
login:

I can login as user or as root, and I can browse trough all directories and modify files.
When I exit as user and then shut the PC down with the on/off button the PC displays:
Stopping K Display Manager: kdm

KDE seems started but I don't have any graphics anymore.
What is wrong?
What do I need to do to get my graphics back?

Many thanks in advance for any help, hint, ....

Marc

Try [Control]+[Alt]+[F7]

This might get you to the X display
