internal 6-in-1 card reader boot problem

Hi,

I've just installed Ubuntu Hoary on my father's machine, and it looks impressive.

However, I've got a problem with the built-in 'In-Win Developments' 6-in-1 card reader..

Essentially, when the machine is booted, the relevant modules are loaded (uhci-hcd; usb-storage; etc..) but the reader isn't initialised properly - the power LED blinks on and off... *But* if I open the machine up, unplug the reader from the mobo and plug back in, it initialises perfectly - power LED on, access light blinking periodically as it is polled by HAL.

Here's a snippet of dmesg under 'fault' conditions -

Code:
......
Apr 26 22:07:48 study kernel: usb-storage: device found at 11
Apr 26 22:07:48 study kernel: usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
Apr 26 22:07:49 study kernel: usb 1-2: USB disconnect, address 11
Apr 26 22:07:50 study kernel: usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 12
Apr 26 22:07:50 study kernel: scsi8 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Apr 26 22:07:50 study kernel: usb-storage: device found at 12
Apr 26 22:07:50 study kernel: usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
Apr 26 22:07:50 study usb.agent[8317]: usb-storage: already loaded
Apr 26 22:07:51 study kernel: eth0: no IPv6 routers present
Apr 26 22:07:52 study kernel: usb 1-2: USB disconnect, address 12
Apr 26 22:07:52 study kernel: usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 13
Apr 26 22:07:53 study kernel: scsi9 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Apr 26 22:07:53 study kernel: usb-storage: device found at 13
.... etc .....
So the reader appears to be continuously powering down, then back up again...

Here's a dmesg snippet when things work properly -

Code:

I've narrowed the problem down to the uhci-hcd module - if the reader is attached after uhci-hcd is loaded, all is OK; but if uhci-hcd is loaded when the reader is attached, the problem occurs....

Thanks in advance for any clues.

Kevin.

PS - All worked fine with Mandrake 10 and SuSE 9.2!
