I am new to using the Linux operating system and just completed an install of Kubuntu 7.04 on my HP Laptop. I downloaded the .ISO image so as to complete the necessary install. However, I noticed the gcc compiler was not installed with the install of Kubuntu.
I am not familiar with the process involved in installing new components into Linux and I hope someone can point me in the right direction to successfully install the gcc compiler. Would it be possible to use the CD or would I require a connection to the Internet?
Thanks.
Update:
When I enter the command "sudo apt-get install build-essential" I get the following error message:
"Package build essential is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source."
E: Package build-essential has no installation candidate.
I thought as much. If I am to use the Internet would I have to use Adept to update and install the necessary packages. I find myself running into some circular dependencies. If someone can post a guide as to what would be the most ideal method of installation I would really appreciate it.
Instead of installing gcc using the Internet, would it be possible to use another Linux distro CD to install gcc instead? For example could I use the gcc package as included within a Fedora or Debian distro?
If you install kdevelop, it should install the gcc compiler and related libs automatically.
I'm a newb myself so don't take my word for it. Personally, I use the Adept installer.
