Install problems with Edgy on ECS P4M890T mainboard
I have recently acquired a desktop with the above mainboard, a Pentium4-D 3.0Ghz CPU, 1GB RAM, 80GB SATA hdu & Samsung Multi DVD-ReWriter (IDE). When trying to run the Edgy Live CD, I get errors saying I/O errors on hda. If I changed the jumpers or IDE channel, hda would change to hdb, etc. I went searching the web, but only found reference to the INTEL chipset that causes a similiar problem. I created a bootable USB stick like they recommended and I was able to install Edgy (dualbooting with XP). Firstly I found that is seemed a bit sluggish compared to my notebook, but what scared me was when I plugged in my USB hard drive (which I bought new a while back) containing my data, I was horrified to discover that all my directories where replaced by approx 40 totally unknown directories and files. I couldn't edit or copy any of these files. They appeared to be in some European language. I rebooted into XP and my files where visible again. I have tried other distros - Opensuse 10.2 & Ubuntu Dapper and they work fine. Noted that I couldn't do an upgrade from Dapper to Edgy... It seems to me that, what I could gather from other posts, there is a problem with Edgy and these new chipsets. Maybe I missed something, I definitely prefer Ubuntu over Suse. Does anybody have any suggestions or comments??
