Install freezes machine up

So I started up ubuntu 6.10 with the install disk. After the desktop loads, I double click on the install icon. A window doesn't exactly pop up but there's one indicated in the tray. There's a lot of noise coming from my computer, but nothing shows up on the screen. After a long time, the noises stop and I can't move my mouse or switch to text via ctrl-alt-fx. Nothing's shown up on the desktop and the thing in the tray is gone. I'm comfortable doing a text install, but I'd rather not download and burn another cd. How can I do a text install from the text side? Or do you know why my computer froze up? Thanks.

If you didn't check the md5sum of your download do that first.

If that checks fine then after you try the install and it does nothing or errors out then you can try the command 'dmesg' at the command prompt (terminal) window and look for errors.

Thanks, I'll try that, but is there any way to install this thing via text?

Wait, would dmsg even work since this is a live cd? I couldn't check it when it's running because my machine freezes up, I couldn't check it after rebooting because it shouldn't be touching my hd.

Turned out my iso I downloaded was good, but it burned badly to my disk. I'll have to buy some more disks now. Thanks.
