Hi all,
I've Ubuntu lucid with the newly updated kernel 2.6.32.34. Until yesterday I've used gthumbs and F-Spot to broese my hard drives for images. Now each time I try to use both of them, Ubuntu kill immediately those processes.
What happened?
Open a konsole, and start the failing application from the command line. You should get some error messages, and that will give us all a clew as to the failure. Post the errors you get, and then we can help.
Now This is the same for F-Spot:
djangou@ESPERYDES:~$ f-spot

The last topic update I remember is the kernel. The others packages were installed automatically, i don't remember what software have been involved. Until now this task didn't cause any prob. Anyway, the ernel was uodated about 4-5 days ago and gthumb/f-spot don't work from 2 days.
Not a good move. Save a least one kernel back as good practice.
So, what about the repos you have selected? You did not answer that.
Suggestion, go into Snaptic, search for one application at a time ie f-spot, and mark it for Reinstallation. Allow that to run, then retry the app. If you want, you could completely remove the app and then install again.
I'm thinking these updates have hosed up some of the libs, or even the app itself.
Unfortunately, I've mess previous kernels ...shame on me. I've used synaptic at first to uninstall F-Spot and reinstall again. I doesn't work. Secondly, I've completely removed the app and reinstalled. Again it fails. If those updates have hosed up some of the libs or the app itself, can I recover them in some way?
Cheers

Reason: grammar err

I need an answer to this.
I suspect you have an incompatibility somewhere, libs with that kernel. If you have installed with non-standard repos, this can cause problems.
I know the application ( f-spot ) works on the older kernels. Have you posted on the Ubuntu forums? You may get better help there. Point them back to this post, we have some good information that will help fix this.
You could re-install the previous kernel, and give that a try also.
In my case Gthumbs doesn't work. As i've done for f-Spot, I've reinstalled-removed-reinstalled again-removed again.

Rep:
I may well be missing something but it doesn't look like you have the "universe" repo. You have the sources for it and the updates repo for it but I do not see the repo itself.
Your sources list is kind of a mess. It does not need to be neat to work. It is easier to read if it is. There is a sample sources list at the link above. You might just copy/paste it in place of yours (you may want to leave out the google repo at the very bottom of that list.
I would rename your current list to sources.list.def and then stick theirs in as sources.list.
Run;
Code:
sudo apt-get update
and
Code:
sudo apt-get upgrade
try opening gthumb in terminal and see what error you get. If it can't find a package try installing it through the terminal so that we get the error messages;

Do you mean something's wrong in synaptic? By using it I go to Settings>Repository>
Ubuntu software:
Open source software supported by canonical (main)
Open source software supported by the community (universe)
Device Drivers (restricted)
Restricted
All these repos are cheked. In the "other software section" I find a series of links such as:
Medibuntu - ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx (http://packages.medibuntu.org/ free non-free)
Medibuntu (source) - Ubuntu 10.04 "lucid lynx"( http://packages.medibuntu.org/ free non-free)
It would be ok. I don't know why these links are not reported in sources.list.
Any ideas?
