browsers don't work

trying to use openSuse 11...cannot use internet browsers. (Konqueror or Firefox)
external dialup modem set up and seen using YAST
modem dials and logs on to ISP (modem seems ready and lights are on)
but NO internet access with the browsers.
Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Check if /etc/resolv.conf has your ISP's name servers in it. Can you ping a site like google by it's IP address?
208.69.36.230

Also check in Firefox's "File" menu and see if Work Offline is selected.
