Can't center image on LCD w/ ubuntu on dell dimension 2350: modelines don't work?

I am running ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) on a dell dimension 2350. From what I can find online, this dell is running the i810 chipset, and xorg seems to be detecting that correctly. The problem is that everything on the screen is shifted about 100 pixels right, leaving a black space on the left and cutting off part of the screen on the right.

The LCD I am using displays a nice sharp picture, but apparently the buttons on the front don't work so I can't adjust the image that way. xvidtune gives me the error "Sorry: you have requested a mode-line That is not possible, or not supported by your hardware configuration" if I try to set a new modeline. xvidtune gives me that error even if I fetch the current modeline and try to apply it again. If I set a new modeline manualy in the xorg.conf file, it doesn't change anything anyway. Apparently the driver I am using ( called i810 in the xorg.conf file, I have the modules i2c_i810 and i2c_algo_bit loaded) cannot use modelines, at least on LCD displays.

What other tricks are there to align the image besides modelines or adjusting the monitor itself?

No, running xvidtune won't help me in any way.

As it happens, I fixed the monitor so I can center the image that way, now I have the problem of trying to make the i810 chipset output 1280x768.

You could simply try setting this in your xorg.conf file(?????), for example;

Code:
Section "Screen"
	Identifier "Screen0"
	Device     "Videocard0"
	Monitor    "Monitor0"
	DefaultDepth     24
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport   0 0
		Depth     16
		Modes    "1280x768" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
	EndSubSection
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport   0 0
		Depth     24
		Modes    "1280x768" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
	EndSubSection
EndSection
And maybe (possible lines to add) to the "Modes" section;

Modeline "1280x768" 167.73 1280 1376 1512 1744 768 769 772 822
Modeline "1280x768" 166.09 1280 1376 1512 1744 768 769 772 821
Modeline "1280x768" 164.66 1280 1376 1512 1744 768 769 772 821
Modeline "1280x768" 80.90 1280 1328 1440 1688 768 772 777 802
Modeline "1280x768" 80.14 1280 1344 1480 1680 768 769 772 795
Modeline "1280x768" 94.98 1280 1352 1488 1696 768 769 772 800

Adjust the refresh rate, that may fix it as well.
