To untar a file open a terminal, cd to where ever you downloaded the file and type the following
tar xvf install_flash_player_7_linux.tar.gz
this will create a directory with the same name w/o the tar.gz extension, cd into that directory and type.
(to get the correct name of the folder type ls on the command line. This will list all files and directories (folders))

i followedw these instructions, but at the apt-get install i still am getting
E: Couldn't find package flashplayer-mozilla
...although i didin't have that line in my sources.list befor you mentioned it.
ok....aha!!
I've added:
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary universe
..plus the backports, run k and detect plugins - and flash now works on k.

I've already sussed it out with apt-get and leonquicks help, but thankyou anyway - the make command is definately on my list of things to learn as well!
Okay, I've done all of this, what howarddevor said, but I still get the message:
E: Couldn't find package flashplayer-mozilla ?!
The worst part: I don't understand why...
