Actually, I checked and was using
both. I guess that explains why it was behaving the way it did. Thanks for pointing this out!
I uninstalled the hpoj using synaptic and changed the line in etc/sane.d/dll.conf (tried both hplip and hpaio). Unfortunately, Xsane no longer sees the scanner. I'm guessing I should open a separate thread for this (getting the scanner working with the hplip driver).
