Gnome failed; which files do I need to modify ?

This is re Ubuntu 9.04. I've been using it without problems for a month or so (upgraded from 8.04).

I've mucked up my gnome session initialization.

I went to Preferences > Startup Programs and added a `program' which in fact was just a line of code to start an xterminal with specified size, font, etc.

When I rebooted I got the `Your session lasted less than 10 seconds ...' dialog and when I OK'd that the session went down. I've tried logging on as a failsafe gnome session and tried to delete that `program' from the menu but this has had no effect.

My question is : what file should I edit to correct the error in the Startup Programs list ?

I'm used to the command line and I've used Knoppix to rescue in the past, but I don't know how to customize gnome when it isn't up.

Thanks in advance ! I should have known better.,.

All I can suggest is:
look in your $HOME directory for the following directories and you may find the file in there:
$HOME/.config
$HOME/.config/autostart
$HOME/.gconf
$HOME/.gnome2

You could also delete them completely - they will be regenerated next time you start.
Of course all customizations will be gone when you do that - back them up first it this is important to you.

Do this while not logged into a gnome-session - i.e. from console or another window-manager.

Thanks for this. In the end I had to do a complete reinstallation. I think that it wasn't actually a gnome problem after all, but deeper in the system.

I'm glad to know about being able to delete those files though.
