Flood of ambiguous errors in kern.log and syslog

Hi all

My kern.log and syslog are being flooded with messages of this form:

Jan 26 21:37:08 host kernel: [ 4053.651516] rc rc7: error -5

... only its a constant flood and for every rcX (X == 0-7).

I've scoured other logs and journalctl - no other related info.

All application software (mariadb, apache2, zoneminder) seems to be able to run fine, though I've also shut all that down and verified the problem still persists.

I've done an update and reboot with no other issues (update completely without error, and reboot went smoothly, as far as I can tell).

Any tips on diagnostic steps ?

SOLVED: after some grep'ing in kernel source for potential error messages of the form, luckily found isolated to infrared devices, doing an rmmod on the only device that had ifrared remote potential stopped the flood.
