No /var/log/messages , syslog , kern.log -but cat /var/spool/octopussy/octo_fifo
Hi,
I made some changes in my nginx and apache web server and all logging stopped work.
If i use
cat /var/spool/octopussy/octo_fifo
I can see some messages which supposed to be stored in messages,kern.log,syslog,mail.err,cron.log,auth.log ... .
rsyslogd runs , octopussy runs , apache runs , nginx runs ... .
Could please anybody help me to fix it ?
thank you,
kind regards,
M.
P.S. how is it about syslog , rsyslog , inetutils-syslogd and systemd in ubuntu 12.04 - any documentation please ?
should be systemd superseded rsyslog in future - as rsyslog superseded syslog ... ?
Well, I made changes back in configs and it started to logging again.
(Documentation is usually about one soft - is not saying about reliability , configure-ability , complexity , weaknesses and ... . I did not find any yet :-)). I had in mind to read some article from highly experienced user/admin where I can find comparison (init vs. init.d vs. systemd) (syslog vs.rsyslog vs. some another) of those software - benefits , weaknesses and so on.
I had many problems with rsyslog before (no logging many times) - it was difficult for me , linux newcomer, to solve it. I went through many documentations/forums and tried different configuration/s but from my point of view I just thought that I can use some more reliable software than rsyslog. That is just my bad experience with this important soft.
About systemd: I have just read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/systemd and wanted to give it a try.
I am curious why are you saying that systemd is horror :-) ? Do you have some bad experience within configuration or running or something else ?

Problems are there to be solved. Rsyslog has pretty good documentation: see the web site.
Else, like I said before, post what you need to do and what changes to make and we'll comment.

As long as I've used rsyslog I found it to be reliable.

No, it's something else. I'm still getting accustomed to its "all eggs in one basket" vs the old "one tool one purpose" approach.
