Failed to download repository information

Hey,

The above title is what I get after the Software Updater tried to do an update. i opened a terminal and entered:

sudo apt-get update

I entered my password and after a long list it ended with this:

W: Failed to fetch http://packages.medibuntu.org/dists/...source/Sources 404 Not Found

W: Failed to fetch http://packages.medibuntu.org/dists/...source/Sources 404 Not Found

W: Failed to fetch http://packages.medibuntu.org/dists/...-i386/Packages 404 Not Found

W: Failed to fetch http://packages.medibuntu.org/dists/...-i386/Packages 404 Not Found

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I closed terminal then opened the Synaptic Package Manager, then in the search bar I entered 'medibuntu' It showed two as being installed. I clicked 'Reload' and after it had done its thing it came up with this: Drum roll...

Failed to fetch http://packages.medibuntu.org/dists/...source/Sources 404 Not Found
Failed to fetch http://packages.medibuntu.org/dists/...source/Sources 404 Not Found
Failed to fetch http://packages.medibuntu.org/dists/...-i386/Packages 404 Not Found

Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead

Prior to posting this Thread, I checked for other threads with the same problem. I changed my proprietary driver from: "Nvidia binary Xorg drive, kernel module and VDPAU library from nvidia-304-update proprietar", to "Nvidia binary Xorg drive, kernal module and VDPAU Library from nvidia-304 tested proprietary"

After which I ran the 'Software Updater', but got the same message about not being able to download the repository info..

I opened 'Software and Updates' I changed Download from; 'Server for the United States' to the 'Main Server' I had to enter my password to make the change. I did this because it was suggested a different server might rectify. I made the change bu nothing changed, I still have those four packages which seem to be lost?

I made certain I had and still have a good Internet connection. So there does not the problem lie. I have tried rebooting my PC,it did not help.

Any suggestions from the Peanut Gallery? Do you think if i went to those URL's and tried to download them then try to install those four medibuntu that would work?? I am going to look into the possibility?

Hey,

It's me again.. I went to the Medibuntu Web site nly to find it was down with a Bold message stating:

The Medibuntu Project ha come to an End.

There was this URL: http://gauvain.pocentek.net/node/61 I clicked on i and found this;

Medibuntu is going down.

The project is not really needed nowadays, except for one package: libdvdcss. This package is now maintained by Jonathan Riddell at Blue Systems. It is available in a repository hosted by VideoLAN.

To disable the Medibuntu repository and enable the libdvdcss one, use these commands:

sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
curl ftp://ftp.videolan.org/pub/debian/videolan-apt.asc | sudo apt-key add -
echo "deb ftp://ftp.videolan.org/pub/debian/stable ./" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/libdvdcss.list
sudo apt-get update

I opened the terminal an entered the above command. After which I closed the terminal and made the comments above. Just a moment ago I opened the Software Update clicking on it and there were two items to be installed both relating to DVD'. I installed them and whether my problem with th 'repository' is over ???

Removing the dead repo entries, which were your problem should have straightened that out.

widget;

Sorry, for not getting back before now. To answer your question; getting rid of those four medibuntu packages seems to have done the trick. However the jury is still out on a few but those may have more to do with the browser then with anything?

I think we can safely say that this has been solved perhaps not in a normal fashion but as they say; "All's well that ends in mire of crabgrass."
