Hello , I am actually using Kubuntu hardy heron.I have just installed hardy heron on my system
its Intel P4 2.66 , 1Gb ram , Mercry P4vm800m7 mobo with built in s3 unichrome graphy.
I cant get past the boot process to X, once boot process is over, it tries to startx , but I get a blank screen
my xorg is
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
That xorg.conf file is missing almost everything generally required for X to start, including a video device (and optional PCI bus location), a video driver (I suggest VESA for that device), some screen resolutions, monitor specs, modules, font paths... The list may go on. It looks like you, or the system, has not attempted to configure the X server at all.
For starters, look in the log /var/log/xorg.0.log for much helpful info about the problems. Then read the man page for xorg.conf. Google for xorg.conf for more info. Search LQ here for MANY examples of xorg.conf files and options you need to make X run.
Have you tried the suggestion on the last commented line of that file, which is "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" to reconfigure the server?
Also, almost every Linux includes a generic 'sample' of what the xorg.conf file should resemble. Perhaps locating that sample configuration and starting there, would be easier than starting from scratch.
