Hi and thank you for taking the time to read this. I recently installed Ubuntu Hoary Hedgehog an updated it, on a friends recommendation (I've been using Slackware Linux for about 3 years now). Anyway, I'm delighted with Ubuntu, but I do have a problem.
My CD burner doesn't work properly. The system recognizes it, but when I put a blank CD in there, it says there's no medium found in it.
Some specifics:
- my burner is an ASUS - CRW-5232AS
- in /dev/ I have entries for cdrom and cdrom1, cdrom corresponds to /dev/hdc and cdrom1 (my burner) corresponds to /dev/hdd
- I am using Kernel 2.6.10
K3b recognizes the burner just fine when I run it as root, or as my normal user. But when I select the burner in the upper left-hand corner of the K3b screen, it fails to recognize it, saying "No disk", even though there's blank CDRW in there. And of course, when I try to burn the disk it fails as well, telling me to insert a blank CD.
What can I do to resolve this problem? Any help is much appreciated, thank you very much.
Ok. Try burning from the command line, see if it works. Here are the steps:
1. Find device ID with : cdrecord -scanbus
2. Create an ISO image (from a CD)
a. Mound the CD to be copied in the appropriate drive
b. dd if=/dev/cdrom of=ISO_image.iso
2A. Or Create a CD from an ISO image
a. Insert black CD into drive
b. cdrecord dev=2,0,0 -data speed=8 ISO_file.iso
Note:
To enable Juliet support (long file names in widows) add -j
To enable HFS (Mac file system) support add -hfs
If this works, then the problem is NOT the CD but the interface you are using, namely K3B.
Okay, I tried cdrecord -scanbus first thing, and this is the output I got:
cdrecord: Warning: Running on Linux-2.6.10-6-386
cdrecord: There are unsettled issues with Linux-2.5 and newer.
cdrecord: If you have unexpected problems, please try Linux-2.4 or Solaris.
cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '/dev/pg*'. Cannot open SCSI driver.
cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'.
cdrecord: For possible transport specifiers try 'cdrecord dev=help'.
cdrecord:
cdrecord: For more information, install the cdrtools-doc
cdrecord: package and read /usr/share/doc/cdrecord/README.ATAPI.setup .
Doesn't look good ...
I tried making myself an ISO image anyway tp continue testing, and I got this message:
dd: opening `/dev/cdrom': No medium found
What would you advise next?
Again, I appreciate your assistance, and most importantly your time.
