I had kubuntu dapper (64 bit) which worked perfectly fine but then I decided to install edgy from a live cd I downloaded.

The trouble is, it installed but failed to boot the pc on its own after installation. It hangs after the kubuntu splash screen goes away and where the logon screen supposed to come. All I get is a black screen.

I figured it was a driver issue so I changed "ati" to "radeon" in xorg.conf using the recovery mode [single user mode] but that didn't help. After googleing I found out that composite is enabled by default in edgy so I disabled it but that didn't help either.

I'm currently in a spot of bother since I don't have any other OS installed and wondering if I should move back to debian again.

My specs are:
Pentium D 2.8 EM64T (duel core)
MSI 945GM Mainboard
Maxtor 160GB sata
ATI Radeon X600
1GB DDR2 Ram

Sorry m8, thought Edgy was a program you had installed... Suddenly it hit me that you were talking about a complete distro

But you might still be able to hit CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE (or was it CTRL-SHIFT-BACKSPACE) to exit Xorg, and access the shell. From there you might be able to reconfigure X to a bare minimum. Might help, might not...

i had tried that but nothing works except the reset button.

I have a similar issue on this laptop right now, only.. its boots to a blank screen with the kubuntu logo, and it just hangs there.

However, i am able to get out of this by doing a "CTRL+ALT+F7". This then switches to a perfectly running gdm screen, in which from there i can choose to launch a gnome or kde desktop.

Hope this helps, though i havent myself found a solution yet.

I was able to run feisty but I had to kill [alt+clt+F1 or F2] xorg and edit graphics driver and composite section to get the live cd started. But then of course I ran into the qpart (is that what it's called?) bug that hangs the installer.

I read in a sticky in kubuntuforums.net which told me a way around this issue but that didn't work for me. the installer kept on hanging and crashing.

Anyway maybe Im gonna give up and install debian etch

Ubuntu is a debian based distro. When it is shipped with gnome it's called ubuntu and when it's shipped kde it's called kubuntu. Dapper is a stable version of ubuntu/kubuntu like debian has sarge and woody. Edgy is the latest stable version from the ubuntu/kubuntu house while feisty is currently in unstable/testing state.

Edit: Found it it's called "gparted", funny it departed every time I ran the instller :P

I'm aware! I've tried ubuntu myself at one time, but found the package system to lack most of my regular packages (a few years ago though, might be better now).
Debian was also my favourite distro until I encountered Gentoo (about 2 years ago).
I should have put two and two together, but I just read "I had Kubuntu Dapper running fine, but when I installed Edgy it all collapsed...". I'm an expert at jumping to conclusions. Which is not a nice trait, I know...
