apt-get mplayer problems

This is what I get when I try to install mplayer:

root@dlux:/home/dlux/Icons # apt-get install mplayer-386
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
mplayer-386: Depends: libavcodeccvs (>= 2:20050417-0.0) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.2.ds1-21) but 2.3.2.ds1-20ubuntu13 is to be installed
Depends: libfontconfig1 (>= 2.3.0) but 2.2.3-4ubuntu7 is to be installed
Depends: libpostproc0 (>= 2:20050417-0.0) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libvorbis0a (>= 1.1.0) but 1.0.1-1 is to be installed
Depends: libxvidcore4 (>= 1:1.0.0-0.0) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: xmms (>= 1.2.10+cvs20050209) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

What do i need to do to fix this. I tried apt with the -f option but it didn't work...

i'd assume this version of mplayer isn't one from ubuntu, as it's using non-ubuntu packages for the resolutions. is there not a suitable mplayer build within the ubuntu repos?

MPlayer

What version of MPlayer are you trying to install? The Ubuntu archives are mplayer-386 and custom. You need to edit your /etc/apt/sources.list and at the bottom of page add the following:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary multiverse
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary multiverse

also uncomment the lines that say universe for both deb and deb-src. Leave the others uncommented. This will install mplayer-386 with the packages that you need. The only package you won't be able to find is libdvdcss you can find that on the internet from debian sites.

I adde those lines, but I get the same result. This is what my sources.list looks like now:

#deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 5.04 _Hoary Hedgehog_ - Release i386 (20050407)]/ hoary main restricted

deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary main restricted
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary main restricted

## Major bug fix updates produced after the final release of the
## distribution.
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary-updates main restricted
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary-updates main restricted

## Uncomment the following two lines to add software from the 'universe'
## repository.
## N.B. software from this repository is ENTIRELY UNSUPPORTED by the Ubuntu
## team, and may not be under a free licence. Please satisfy yourself as to
## your rights to use the software. Also, please note that software in
## universe WILL NOT receive any review or updates from the Ubuntu security
## team.

deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary universe
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary universe

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary-security main restricted
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary-security main restricted

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary-security universe
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary-security universe

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary multiverse
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary multiverse

deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat stable main
deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat unstable main
deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat testing main

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary multiverse
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary multiverse

Thanks for all your help!

You know what it might be the server you're trying to you, change the us. to ca. and get rid of the last two servers you have them already and comment out the nerim repositories. You don't need them to install mplayer-386 the multiverse repositories are good enough. After changing those things type sudo apt-get clean and then sudo apt-get update. After installing the software you want, you can add back the nerim repositories. I don't use them I get everything I need from the multiverse and universe. Last and not least uncomment the security-universe repositories. See if that works.

When i changed the "us"s to "ca"s and commented out the nerim repositories, I couldn't find mplayer. So i put the nerim repositories back in and the same thing happened. Is there anything else that I can try?

Another Method

Ok well take uncomment the nerim repositories, and change the ones you changed to ca back to us. After make sure you only have one of these:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary multiverse
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary multiverse

uncomment the security-universe and the nerim repositories. After you just run apt-get clean and then apt-get update. Before you do anything make sure mplayer isn't installed or any config files exist. When you install mplayer there versions. I think the ones that exist are mplayer-386 and mplayer-custom.
