apt mplayer

hey,

I just installed red hat 8 on my computer about a week ago (newbie), and I've been trying to get a video player on it ever since. All of the rpms I get say I need another package, e.g. aalib, libaa, and every time I think I get it, it doesnt work. so most recently, I've been trying apt, typing in:

apt-get install mplayer

and at first, it seems like its working, it downloads all of the parts and everything, but when it goes to put it together it shoots me this message:

file /usr/lib/libxvidcore.so from install of xvidcore-0.9.0-fr3 conflicts with file from package xvid-0.20020412-4
E: Sub-process /bin/rpm returned an error code (6)

is that a leftover from another install that I tried? Anyone have any suggestions or just an easy way to watch a video file?

thanks a lot
-andrew

not sure what might have installed xvid for you already, but i'd say just remove the existing installation of xvid.
