AMD Radeon HD 8570 2GB in Ubuntu 14.04 x64
Hello all;
I have acquired a new computer, an Asus Essentio Series, that comes with Windows 8.1 preinstalled.
Obviously, I have installed Ubuntu 14.04, but I am not completely sure that the SO is taking the optimum driver for the graphics card. Grub for example appears with low resolution, and the SO, is working ok, but I don not know is this model is fully supported.
the graphics card is detected as:
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc [AMD/ATI]: Oland [Radeon HD 8500 Series]
Then there are 3 options to choose
xserver-xorg-video-ati (open code, tested)
fglrx (privated)
fglrx-updates (privated)
Which is best? How can I know the graphics card is at optimum prformance?
Thank you all very much in advance,

i like that!
i think you should try the last: fglrx-updates.
and reboot.
if that doesn't solve it, post output of "lsmod" and "lspci".

Thank you for the response.
GRUB continues in low resolution for example.... y post output of lsmod and lspci for both drivers. I can not see any noticable differences. Can any expert tell me what to choose? :-)

please use code tags for code.
this is a pita to read.
but it looks like both lsmod outputs are the same, which means that the setup hasn't changed between installing fglrx and before.
please, edit your last post and put code tags around the code (go advanced -> # ).
how new is your machine? i mean not when you bought it but how long has it been on the market?
have you searched the web?
"linux oland" returned this:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...tem&px=MTU3Njg
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2216720
which leads me to ask what kernel you are using? have you made a complete system update after installing?

Sorry for the code tags, solved....
The pc, I dont know how long it has been on the market, seems to be pretty new, I can not find it in Asus website, but the model is this:
http://tiendas.mediamarkt.es/p/pc-de...radeon-1215452
I am using Ubuntu 14.04, kernel 3.13.0-24 64 bits.
In lspci command, the graphics card is detected properly, it seems:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Oland [Radeon HD 8570 / R7 240 OEM]
The links indicate people are having problems with this GPU.... dont they? Lets hope it is fixed as soon as possible....

Hi again;
Back at home.. the output of uname -a is:
Code:

Does it give any valuable information?

i'm sorry, it seems you already posted your kernel version earlier... maybe i wasn't quite awake when i wrote my last post...
the phoronix link seems to suggest that a higher kernel (3.14?) would make the card work better.
once again:
have you made a complete system update after installing?
anyhow,
it seems that xserver-xorg-video-ati is the proper driver (i.e. kernel module) for your graphic card.
in your lsmod output, it looks like video uses some asus_wmi module. you should find out if it belongs to that package.
Code:
video 19476 1 asus_wmi
for the following advice, you should make sure that you're using xserver-xorg-video-ati - uninstall the other video driver(s).
you might want to read this bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...i/+bug/1301839
THOROUGHLY.
there might be some pointers on how to fix this.
maybe you can find even more relevant bug reports.
