Hello, I am new to linuxquestions and I am not sure if this is the correct part of the site to post this, so I apologize in advance if I am posting in the wrong part of the forums. I have an AMD APU as mentioned in the title. On Ubuntu 12.04(32-bit, haven't tested any other Linux Distributions other than the 64-bit version of 12.04)(the 64-bit version will give me the same results) I get a lot of screen tearing. This occurs with the proprietary AMD driver and not the open source one. I prefer to use the proprietary one because it is faster. I have enabled Tear Free Desktop in the Catalyst Control Center, but this has not made a very big difference (there is a little difference, but it is still very noticeable). Any help is appreciated. The proprietary drivers are infamous for causing tearing. Unless you are gaming or doing serious photo editing, you should switch to the open source drivers.

Well I'm not a gamer or photo editor but when watching 1080p videos, the video is slow and laggy. It works fine with the closed source drvier but there is that screen tearing problem which is wayyyy more annoying. Is there a way I can still watch 1080p videos at a good frame rate and use the open source drivers at the same time. If anybody has any other solutions please tell me. Thanks for your help.

I'll have to report back to you on the slow video performance. I'm using the proprietary ones (I play some games and sometimes photo edit). I don't get screen tearing at all.

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz

I think the reason for that is because you do not have an APU like I do. It's probably a problem with the proprietary drivers for the APU's. I haven't come across any people who have an APU so I haven't been able to ask anybody.
