Question [Help] Ubuntu 6.06's Persistent Feature

Can anyone please point me to the correct guide/tutorials on using the persistent feature (saving/restoring configuration) of Ubuntu 6.06? I'm using the LiveCD feature and would like to save my configuration in USB flash drive.

Am using Knoppix 4 LiveCD as well and it's damn easy (and convenient) to save/load configuration. But I didn't like Knoppix cos it's a bit messy. Ubuntu is very streamlined but there's no convenient way to save/restore configurations.

I was at the Ubuntu forum before but all their solutions area a bit messy and sometimes hard to follow - some say this, others say that...

I have no idea how "fix" your Ubuntu problem, but MEPIS has an OnTheGo feature that may be just what you want. Caveat: I know it only by description, I have never had occasion to use it.

BTW, are you using Ubuntu itself & Gnome, or Kubuntu & KDE?

@archtoad6: Sory for the extremely late reply. Was busy with the "Windows" world but now back to tinkering with Linux. Am using Ubuntu (Gnome) 6.06 LTS - a fan of Gnome By the way, is MEPIS a Live CD? Also, does it have GCC and uses Gnome? Thanks

Yes it is live. In fact, it was a 1 CD "combo" -- live & install -- before *buntu was.
Code:
# which gcc
/usr/bin/gcc

# apt-get install -s gnome-d<TAB>
gnome-db2 gnome-dev-doc gnome-doc-utils
gnome-desktop-data gnome-devel
gnome-desktop-environment gnome-doc-tools
The default is KDE, but it is, I am told, easy to add GNOME w/ apt-get -- see 2nd code snippet above. Sorry, I've never done this, but gnome-desktop-environment should be a good start. Of course I am running SimplyMEPIS 3.3.2 & the package names may have changed now that MEPIS tracks the Ubuntu repositories. The current package name is probably gnome-desktop or gnomedesktop, I'm not sure.

Thanks for the info on MEPIS. I've just went through the Ubuntu's official forum and still, no solutions/tutorials/guides on persistent storage. Gonna give MEPIS a shot if all fails. By the way, I've browsed through MEPIS official site and I can't seem to locate screenshots. Do you happen to have links to some screenshots? Thanks again

Couldn't find any screenshots, what did you want to see?

I did find this tutorial -- How to Set Up and Use Your OnTheGo Drive in SimplyMEPIS 6.0.
It's a bit brief, but I think you can follow it.

I tried it out, here's what I did:
  1. Made the OnTheGo thumb drive under SimplyMEPIS 3.3.2 (my regular booted ver.).
  2. Copied only .kde to onthego.
  3. Tested it on another box booting a SimplyMEPIS 3.4-3 live/install CD.
The instructions worked, the results were a partial success:
  • (+) My mouse was for the left hand.
  • (+) I had my 8 virtual desktops.
  • (+) My custom virtual desktop nav. keys worked.
  • (+) My child panel existed.
  • (-) My child panel had no contents.
  • (-) My custom Quick Launch icons were missing.
  • (-) The standard Quick Launch icons were there.
  • (-) The "fish", KAquarium, were there (on the Panel) -- they weren't on my source desktop.
  • (-) KTimemon (?), the Panel resource display of 3 moving vertical bars, was missing.

I don't know what would have happened if I had used the same ver. of SimplyMEPIS for both parts of my trial. I also don't know would have happened if I had used SimplyMEPIS 6.0.

My main interest in OnTheGo is to transfer my desktop customizations to 6.0 from my current 3.3.2 install.
