LXer: Why a Rolling Release Model is the Way to Go for Any OS

Published at LXer:

In the last year or so, I've noticed that rolling-release distributions are becoming more and more popular among Linux users, and even big names like Ubuntu are considering the switch to a rolling update development model.

But bugs and incompatibilities have more chance with this model. Timed releases are more integrated without these negatives.

It depends. Rolling release does not mean that any and all version upgrades have to occur at time of release. Gentoo and Arch both have testing repositories, which get the updates first and where they are tested by users (just like someone running Debian Testing or Unstable does). Only if no problems occur those updates are trickled down into their stable repositories (if you can call them that). So, while it is indeed more likely to run into problems with a rolling release, it is not really a problem when you kepp yourself to those stable repositories. In the end, it is up to the user to decide if that possibility outweighs the benefits you get from the rolling release model.

Well this way of thinking approach makes it more flexible as well as good stability. Upgrade only after enough time of confirming stability of packages.
