LXer: The 'Year of the Linux desktop' isn't coming

Published at LXer:

Linux is 20 years old this year, and for most of those years I’ve been hearing about how the ‘Year of the Linux desktop’ is coming. It’s not coming. Linux it’s stuck permanently at a 1% market share. And that’s where it’ll be ten years from now. But that doesn’t mean that there’s no hope for the OS.

Who cares. For me every year is "Year of Linux on anything", Linux on my server, my desktop, my laptop and my netbook. Hm, need more devices to run Slackware on them.

For me, 2005 was "The Year Of The Linux Desktop" - that's when I first installed it.

Even if it dropped below 0.1%, it wouldn't make any difference to me whatsoever.

Ditto. Desktop market share was never a factor in my decision to switch to Linux.

I honestly don't see any reason to believe Linux will ever grow much in the desktop market. Windows serves the majority of those users to their satisfaction. Mac OSX is as good a contender as we're likely to ever see, especially as the traditional desktop computing model quickly erodes in the face of portable computing devices.

Sure it would be nice if more software and hardware were designed with Linux in mind, but IMHO what we have right now is pretty damn good. As to whether we will be allowed to keep it and continue evolving it, that's a subject for another thread.

I agree. I haven't used Linux for that long (since 2005) but I can see how much the hardware support has improved. I remember having to manually tinker with the system to install drivers for an audio card, NIC, touchpad (forget about wireless), etc. in my first laptop with FC4. Now I install Slackware and everything works out of the box. What more would I want?
