LXer: No longer a KDE fan

Published at LXer:

KDE used to be a very nice desktop environment for Linux, I remember using it over the years in CentOS, Fedora Core, Kubuntu, Mandriva, and PCLinuxOS. I used KDE 3.5.x in Kubuntu and thought it was the best desktop environment available for the Linux operating system. But what would a new Linux user feel about Linux if KDE 4 were the first environment they attempted to run?

I could not disagree with this article more. I have used KDE 4 since the beginning and some of the things that he mentions were in fact true in the past. However, it is not the fault of KDE developers if distributions decide to include KDE 4 before it is ready. Many distros still use KDE 3.5 as they recognize that KDE 4 is a work in progress. Proof of this is the way they have added features incrementally and still plan to add more. KDE 4 took a major step forward in terms of usability with the release of KDE 4.1.

I am writing this on KDE 4 and like it enough to use it regularly. I don't use it as it comes out of the box, but configure it to my way of working. In the beginning I could not do this and was frustrated. Now I have the menu bar at the top and have customized it. I love QT 4 and Plasma. It is fresh and exciting.

He says that he does not like Dolphin. He can still use Konqueror. It still works as a file manager and browser. He can remove Dolphin altogether and use Konqueror as his file manager. I did this in the early months as Dolphin lacked some features, but it is much improved and is growing on me.

I won't address Kcontrol as I have never used it. I suspect that he is making it out to be worse than it is. But he talks about crashes. That was then. I had experienced lots in the early months, but now there are no more than in Gnome. KDE 4 has matured much.

He says that he does not know if Dolphin has tabs. It does. Try Ctrl-T. This is a superficial revue that does not need the promotion that it is being given by Lxer. It does not reflect the true state of KDE 4, nor does it explore all of the niceties of this feature rich and lush OS. It only deals with a few problems, most of which are now insignificant and may not really be an issue at all.

Many KDE 3.5 users are going to feel abandoned as development of it will cease. These users need to get on with it and get used to the new KDE which is daring and exciting. It is to be available for Windows and Mac OS/X which will give dual booters are common interface in all OSes that they might choose. This is exciting in itself as Windows and OS/X both suffer from a lack of choice.

I say don't promote fear mongering and negative reviews. Try it for yourself and not spread willy nilly the negativity of others. Look for balance before promoting things that you read.
