LXer: Linux will never rule the desktop

Published at LXer:

Linux will never rule the desktop, and here's why: If you draw a line giving the rate at which Linux is taking over the desktop you'll see it'll take several years from now to become the biggest operating system on desktops. This is never going to happen, because the desktop as it is will die long before we reach this point. The good thing is Microsoft will probably die with it!

I've been reading email mobile now for years, it's so much easier when you just see the headlines of your emails on the screen of your in car navigation while driving.

OK, this simply suggests that evolution will keep the desktop around for eons simply because those who have abandoned the desktop are lying dead on the side of the road becuase they were reading their email RATHER THAN PAYING ATTENTION TO WHERE THE ()#$*)(&#$^#$& THEY WERE GOING.

I swear, there has been a profound and stunning decrease in the IQ of bloggers recently.

Very true. Seems like everybody who can string more than two words together is writing pointless crap these days. See my LQ blog for examples of literary excellence and thought-provoking material.

I agree ... or maybe I noticed it less before...

So, let's see here, I'm a gamer, and I want a big LCD screen to play games on, and a powerful computer. So far desktops beat laptops at performance / cost ratio, and are typically significantly more powerful. So, why should I get a gaming laptop that costs more and likely has smaller screen than get a desktop with costs less with a bigger screen and more power ? Just for the portability ?

For many games I need the internet and usually wireless doesn't cut it. And most hotels, although they do offer some type of internet connection, it is usually not good and not cheap either. I'll stick to my gp2x when I go on vacation.
