LXer: 80-characters-per-line limits should be terminal says Linus Torvalds

Published at LXer:

As he gives us Linux 5.7 with support for Apple power tech and better exFAT. Linux overlord Linus Torvalds has railed against 80-character-lines as a de facto programming standard and has moved to make reminders to keep thinigs short a thing of the past.…

80 character line width was chosen for readability, not for programming!

Many used 75 to make it more readable, but 132 was useful when using spreadsheets, etc.

I hate huge long lines of text, & massive great big image files, when posted online!

I expect there are others too who feel as I do - just because you can, doesn't make it right!

Yes, I dislike overly-long lines also. Part of the problem here is when people insist on using tab indentation with the default 8 column tabstop. A second level indent will have already eaten 16 columns before the code even starts. Add in the overly-long function and parameter names everyone seems to use these days and it's no wonder lines get a little lengthy.

Personally, I prefer a 4 space indent, but I accept that I'm straying into "holy war" territory here that rivals vi vs emacs.

I don't mind going a few characters past 80 if that would complete the line, but code containing really long lines is just horrid to read and better continued over multiple lines.

P.S.
emacs!
