Slackware wins LQ's Members Choice Award: Desktop Distro of the Year 2016

Posted 02-08-2017 at 04:14 AM by GazL (GazL's Gazette)

My congratulations to Mr. Volkerding.

Slackware has always had a strong and loyal contingent here on LQ. We have Slackware users here who have been using it for decades and who wouldn't dream of using anything else -- which says a lot: either about it, or them, or both, and I'll let you decide for yourself on that one. -- so it's no surprise that Slackware did well in the vote: it always does.

The danger of '.desktop' files!

There was an interesting post on r/linux today outlining some of the insanity relating to the use of .desktop files on linux desktops. The information is nothing new -- it's been like this for years and is also why you'll pry my window-manager+xterm working environment from my cold dead hands -- but it's one of the clearest examples of the dangers I've seen on the subject.

If you're unaware of this stuff, you shouldn't be. Go have a read:

After you install a linux system, you will most likely be editing a number of config files to set various options and parameters the way you would like or need them to be. This is especially true with a distro like Slackware that takes the traditional approach and tries to honour the intentions of upstream rather than put its own layer of abstraction over the configuration of your system. Keeping track of what you've changed can be a pain, especially should you ever need to re-install. Here,...

Use the Shell, Luke.

One from the light-side:
Quote:
The Shell is what gives a grey-beard his power.
It's an interface to all installed tools.
It surrounds them, and penetrates them.
It binds the UNIXverse together.

You too must come to Slackware if you are to learn the ways
of the Shell and become a grey-beard like your father.
And one from the dark-side:
Quote:
Do not be too proud of this technological terror you have constructed. The power to destroy a system
