Yet another smartlink modem problem, but on Suse 9.3
Hi guys, I just upgraded my suse 9.2 to suse 9.3. I did a clean *new installation*. Now, let me just say this, that I did get my smartlink modem working a couple of times from installing, and re-installing my 9.2 distro. Now that I've installed the latest version of suse 9.3, i already had the latest linux driver version from the smartlink web site.
I un-tarred the file, then did a 'make' and 'make install'. Usually from there, I needed to install the modules into the kernel by typing in: modprobe slusb
This did not work, and it gave the following error:
FATAL: Error inserting slusb (/lib/modules/2.6.11.4-20a-smp/extra/slusb.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
Okay, I then tried to go one step back. I did a 'make uninstall' and opened up YAST. I then selected from the package software installation selector, the 'smartlink-softmodem' package. This was installed, but not any of the following was available in the /dev folder
/dev/slusb*
/dev/ttySLO
Now, did anybody get this working? Also, I failed to mention earlier, it's a USB modem 'SmartUSB56'
Hmm...I'm a bit disgusted. I even re-tried to install suse 9.3, but still can't get the modem working. Has anybody ANY ideas? I have to sit here with awfull windows xp and type this message. Maybe I just need to revert back to suse 9.2.
OOhh, and Also, another thing, I've yet to spend I bit more time, but before I re-installed, I tried to get vmware and superkaramba working. Also, both of them did'nt work...scanned vmware's website, ahh, could not solve it....Why is it that everytime I bump up to the next distro, nothing works anymore. I think, THIS is a flaw that needs to be addressed in the linux world.
Anyways, my thoughts. hmm...maybe I'm just irritated for spending almost 2 days now trying to JUST get onto the net!!!
Please, if anybody have ideas, I would really appreciate them
In regards to the Suse9.3 slmodem package, look in yast->yast2 modules->system->system services and turn on slmodemd there. You can edit the script /etc/rc.d/slmodemd to put in settings relevant to yourself. On cable so haven't used slmodemd since upgrading to 9.3.
I restarted my machine, and tried as you said. First I installed the smartlink-softmodem from the package list, then wen't to the services, and tried to start it. I then go the message that it failed, due to not finding the 'slusb' or 'slamr'. I get the feeling the modules weren't compiled into the kernel?
Then I tried the other *root* I once again tried the smartlink library I downloaded from the smlink.com web site. Did a make, and make install. I then wen't to the location etc/rc.d/slmodemd as you specified, and edited the file to match my country location, and specified slusb. Now, when i executed: slmodemd start
I got the following message, it's similar to the message I got before
Starting SmartLink Modem driver: FATAL: Error inserting slamr (/lib/modules/2.6.11.4-20a-smp/extra/slamr.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
FATAL: Error inserting slusb (/lib/modules/2.6.11.4-20a-smp/extra/slusb.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
startproc: exit status of parent of /usr/sbin/slmodemd: 255
When I looked at the dmesg output it showed the following:
I get the feeling that, like I tried before, 2 days ago, when you try todo a modprobe slusb, that the modules does not want to be loaded into the kernel.
Hmm....any ideas? They will be welcome. Well, there could be another solution. I can go buy a internal modem. But will it work? I've never tried linux with a internal or serial modem before? Will I still get the same kind of problems when installing a internal modem? Also, does it need to be a specific brand, or will linux pick it up? This could be a cheap solution. I can get my hands on a internal pci modem vir R70 south african (+- $11). Could be a cheap way of solving this problem
Hey guys, I got it working. I followed the instructions from a company here in south africa called raspberry solutions. Takes you through step by step on how to configure the modem!! WHoohoo
please, could you send/post info which was on that link somewhere else so i could read it? i need to really enable that modem in slovenia since i have a laptop and suse 9.3, and i want to dialup from home.
Found the how to on Michaels website however it doesn't work for me. I am using SuSE 9.3 also, but when I do "/usr/sbin/slmodemd --country=USA /dev/slamr0" I get back:
error: mdm setup: cannot open dev `/dev/slamr0': No such device or address
error: cannot setup device `/dev/slamr0'
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!!
mee too. only have dial-up access in my area, and need help with smartlink modem after upgrading to 9.3...
Sorry guys, I no longer work for that company anymore and I also don't use dialup anymore. I suggest subscribing to the linmodems.org mailing list and getting help there. I cannot remember what my scripts were like so I can't help.
at the first part of my post here i really did have problems with slmodem. however, once upon a time gentoo linux with some wvdial idiotic manual installing helped me to overcome them. (but of course the slamr module was correctly compiled and loaded long before that).
with suse linux i discovered that during testing and trying to fix the f***ing stupid modem i have accidentally burn its outer circuit. internally the machine recognizes it, but its circuit for interfacing the telephone cable was gone. because this is an integrated modem inside a laptop, i finally decided to go for a cable instead dial up (effectively using the network card instead modem).
so i am sorry but the modem is gone and i never succeded to connect through suse - i do not know in what particular moment modem broke so i do not if it is not due to that broke.
