I am by no means a Linux expert, but try this on for size.
The speed with with YaST can perform a software upgrade/update is dependent on a number of factors:
1. The load on the server. The more people banging on a given server, the slower that server will be in responding to data requests.
2. The number of jumps between the selected server and your location. The more machines/routers/bridges, etc that a transmission block traverses on its journey to your computer, the slower it will be.
3. The amount of data that needs to be downloaded from the server just to update the YaST display. I'm guessing here, but I would guess this is a non-trivial amount?
4. The band-width between your computer and the server. The data can only go as fast as the smallest pipe will allow. Here, your 56KB modem may be a severely limiting factor.
What might be helpful to you in diagnosing this problem is to know if your computer/modem is trans/rec data. If so, then it's not YaST freezing on you - it's just waiting until it gets all the data it needs before it updates the screen.
As a final note, though I am running on a 4mb cabel modem, I to have seen YaST "freeze" on me. Usually, if I wait just a little while, it suddenly comes awake and updates the screen and all is good again.
I hope this helped some, but I fear it didn't.
