Warning - Multimedia & YOU; also YOU log?

I had 100% working multimedia support under SuSE 10.2 x64, except for AVI's - they were spotty, some played, some didn't.

Then, I read somewhere to try to run YOU (YaST Online Update) and that might fix it.

It killed *everything*, set it back to the factory MPEG-only. I successfully removed & re-installed xine, w32codec-all, xvid, etc (from Packman) but am still missing AVI.

Just wanted to put the warning out there.

Also - does YOU keep a log of what it updates? It really could have helped in rolling back the changes.

That's one of the long time problems with SuSE. Novell doesn't want you to play certain file types. If you put the parts to play these files on the SuSE system then any online update will put it back to the factory restrictions.

The question for you is whether you are going to keep up to date with patches, which you should do, or are you going to avoid software updates? It would be better to use a distribution that doesn't break things that you've installed just because the distribution developers have decided what you may or may not do with your computer. This is the main reason that I abandoned SuSE. I don't even use multimedia on my computer but it's the principle that's at stake.

BTW this may also be a problem with other distributions that want to become popular in business.

Or better yet, run the whole show and don't use any distro.

I use SuSE on over a dozen computers right now, only 2 of which even have a GUI. I'm not going to abandon it because of a minor issue. If anything, I'll just stop using YOU for my updates.

Is there any log that shows what YOU does? Maybe package selection will let me protect my settings...
