the saga continues: P4P800-E Delux & SuSE 10.0

hi

yesterday I decided to change my SuSE 9.0 to 10.0 (a clean new install). Knowing that there is no RAID driver for 10.0 for the onboard Promise controller, I hoped that my two Raid-disk will just emerge as simple IDE disks (I changed the operation mode for the Promise controller in the BIOS from RAID to IDE).
I can remember, this was the case, when I first installed 9.0. But now, I can't see the disks, no matter what I set the different values in the BIOS.

can anyone tell me, how to make the disks visible to SuSE? I'd like to use these extra IDE slots, since the regular 4 IDE's are all in use.
Is it maybe because of the RAID information on the disks, that prevents SuSE from recognizing the disks?

I guess, I'll have to invest in a quality RAID controller next time...

thanks in advance,
bbking

I hope I am wrong. But the last time I checked the 2.6 kernel SuSE 10 uses doesn't support RAID. And I believe the only way to get it to work is to rebuild the installer using the 2.4 kernel. But I have no idea how to do this. A RAID controller might fix it, but if the kernel doesn't support RAID, that might not even be an option.

thanks, thats true, 2.6 doesn't support this driver but the the SATA port should be supported through the promise_sata module. can't try it myself, as I dont have SATA drives, but I'm already thinking about getting two, because they are really fast and the cables are slim and nice, unlike the wide IDE things.

to be honest, I did NOT want to use the RAID port as RAID, it can be used as third and fourth IDE ports....but even this was not working out, so I set up a sw-raid on the secondary IDE port...well, it's still fast enough, and the difference between SuSE 9.0 and 10.0 can be measured in lightyears!!!

thanks anyway!
