Believe it or not I am still using dial-up.....ok did someone faint there?

Well anyway I am finally looking at moving to broadband and I am looking at telewest for the the broadband service, as they do a nice package right now where you get tv too, so Im just wondering how easy is it to currently setup TWBB using Suse Linux? I asked the telewest people about linux but after a long silence and putting me on hold they came back and said that I can use it but they offer no technical support and will not set it up for me, but if I want to use it then thats fine, so can anyone give me a step by step guide of hooking it up so I get an idea how easy it will be?

I am very much a point an click user so a no command line help would be great.

Also, is the firewall easy to hook up for this? I just use the Suse firewall, for my dialup right now. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!

Assuming;
a: you have a proper ethernet card and
b: you'll be using a cable modem

I believe that Telewest use the same modem as NTL. These are rather decent as they have both USB and ethernet ports. If you use the ethernet, you'll find that connecting is a doddle.

It should simply work.

If your firewall is working OK with the dial-up connection, that should be no problem either.

That is cool, does the NTL service work well for you with linux? Do you get any outages or problems with it? I think NTL and Telewest are one company now arent they?

NTL's Internet service is excellent - it's the customer service that's complete sh*te.
All you need to do is set your NIC to do everything via DHCP (through Yast) and plug the modem in.
NTL:Telewest are now one company. In fact, they've just bought Virgin Mobile!

I have used the Telewest Broadband service for years now with various distros of linux (redhat, debian, suse, even knoppix) and had no problem with any of them, just plug it in and off you go!

Does the modem telewest provide work ok by hooking it up to the network card or do you have to use another modem or router?

Is it easy to setup the network card via yast?

Although it's pretty much the default setings, always worth checking.

(ssuming your network card has been recognised)
Select network card) => Edit

Yast => Network Devices => Network Card
Check radio button "Automatic Address Setup (via DHCP)"

Next => Next

That's it - done. plug the ethernet cable in, log on, start surfing.
