Switching GUI
Hey guys,
I'm currently using KDE and really have no problem with it. I just want to try something different for a little while. I know that SuSE comes with GNOME, but I can't figure out how to do a switch. Any help?
Thanks,
BarfBag

If you use 9.2, you could try WindowMaker that loads much faster than KDE. In the KDM login window, click Menu->session Type->WindowMaker.

If you are using 9.2 Pro then the Gnome files are already on your install disks. Just open YaST, select the Install and Remove Software module, choose Sections as the filter, and tick the box next to Gnome System. If you want to set Gnome as the default WM that can be done in the System/Sysconfig Editor module in YaST.

After you enter the Sysconfig Editor module you do the following:
- Tick the "+" sign next to "Desktop"
- Tick the "+" sign next to "Window Manager"
- Click on the heading "DEFAULT_WM"
Now look in the right hand portion of the window. See the drop down menu?
Use that menu to change your default WM to Gnome.
If you installed GDM and would rather use that than KDM you can also change that by clicking the "+" sign next to "Display Manager", highlight the heading "DISPLAYMANAGER", and again use the drop down menu. However, you will also need to set up a new group called "gdm" for it to work properly. I'd put that on hold for now unless you have previously configured a similar setup. Otherwise, you'll have to start your XSession from the command line on your next boot.
You can also just edit the appropriate text config files but I am using YaST to assist you since this is apparently the preferred method in SuSE. It's also a good way to learn how to use those GUI modules.
