Question SuSe Linux 10.0 Install error

Had a system crash & had to reinstall DVD Suse 10.0

Every time I try to boot can only do so from the DVD
& none of my settings stick when I reboot.

Have reinstalled a couple of times & tried diff. things but to no avail.. besdie checked several sams install books...
I have cleared the drive several times & reformated
whole drive in 32 Bit & NTFS 7 16 bit dos.

One time @ boot had 01 01 01 01 01 01 ... fill the screen also did the same thing w/ 04 04 04 etc...

In addition I saw this error msg. several times after
I could not boot from hda (New Maxtor 200 gb).

"Grub loading stage 1.5

Grub loading, please wait...
error 17"

Any ideas? I am new to Linux but i liked what I
saw when it was working.

Glad to be new member...

Thanks!

I don't understand what you mean by this. You should use a Linux type filesystem such as ext3, reiserfs, xfs, jfs, etc. Do the formatting during the installation instead of ahead of time.

Fat32 and NTFS don't hold the permission informaton needed to run linux. Also, NTFS is mounted readonly.

I believe that error 17 indicates an unrecognized filesystem on the root drive.

You might supply information about the drive. Is it IDE, SCSI or SATA?
How is it partitioned? Where did you install the grub loader? /dev/hda?
From your description the MBR wasn't updated properly.

It's an IDE drive & I will wipe the drive again & start over.

The grub loader is on /dev/hda2 & I do have a swap file
on hda1.

I did reformat to reiserfs after it gave the msg. the first time. I have done all this using Yast.

Thank you.

I would recommend using /dev/hda for the MBR. I'd also recommend a separate /boot partition using ext3. Both lilo and grub can use it.

Eh. Make life simple. Boot from hda and let the install do all the formatting. Using Windows partitioning and formatting is definitely not going to help here although, if you let the install do a full partitioning and formatting, it won't matter that much (installation process will toss the existing partitions). Unless you just have to have lilo in your world, again, let the install make the call and stick with grub. Messing with loaders is not a good place to be for newbies.
