Angry suse 8.1 install error

Okay...

After messing with RH8 for about a month, i was sick of the haggard package manager, not being able to install new themes reliably, and not being able to watch videos. An install of mplayer did nothing but crash (sig 4: unknown - i tried both the rpms and compiling the source). I also had a external firewire hard drive i wanted to use, but i couldn't figure out how to get it working in RH.

So...after hearing good things about suse 8.1 and mplayer included in the distro, I tried the FTP install - if i tried to write grub to the MBR, i couldn't load linux or windows because it bad a kernel panic.

I tried to install GRUB to my boot partition on my hd, it would go all the way through the install and then it would load grub in a text mode and then it said it couldn't load the kernel.

After about 4 failed attempts, I reinstalled LILO and then installed while leaving the boot manager alone. The install always fails about 35-45% through, giving me an error message that says "there was an error during installation" and then my network module stops working.

please help, NOTHING works.

box info :

hp pavillion ze1250 laptop
30 gig hd : ext2 boot/NTFS/ext3/linuxswap
cdrom drive but no floppy

does anyone have any ideas? is there something i'm just not paying attention to? i've looked all over for help on this, to no avail. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is SuSE Linux Live-eval CD works on your machine?

Try download it here:

Have a lot of fun :-)

live eval

Yes, the live eval works. (I'm actually running it right now.)

I still have no idea why the install just quits though, it always errors out. I'm going to give it one more shot as a clean install and not dual boot it. So here goes.

Thanks for the idea though.

alternative solution

Nevermind this thread, problem solved.

Seeing as I've slacked off far too long on my term paper (due tomorrow, not started) I needed my computer so I just decided to run redhat8 again. Got mplayer working and gaim and just about everything I couldn't get to work before.

As far as I'm concerned, I've got just about everything I need from RH now. Suse can count me out.
