suse 9.2 does not see the cdrom

Hi every
i have installed suse 9.2 on an acer hardware. the installation works fine.
the ide hardware recognized by BIOS is:

IDE Channel 0 Master:
WDC WD800BB-22JHA0 05.01C05
IDE Channel 0 Slave:
HDS722512VLAT80 V330A6MA
IDE Channel 1 Master:
LITE-ON CVDRW SOHW-1633S BRS6
IDE Channel 1 Slave:
HDS722512VLAT80 V330A6MA

i.e on
ide0 i have two disks (western digital and hitachi),
ide1 i have the dvdrecorder and another hitachi disk, the same disk type as on ide0 slave.

we would expect to have these frour devices activated under linux as

/dev/hda (the western digital disk)
/dev/hdb (the hitachi disk)
/dev/hdc (the dvdrecorder)
/dev/hdd (the hitachi disk)

BUT when booting, after recognizing ide0, the process stops for quite a while, and then a msg similar to the following is displayed:

/dev/hdc: cannot connect (status 0x80)

and then the boot process continues.

this ends up in not letting me access the dvdrecorder from the suse 9.2. i can, however, access the disk on ide1 at /dev/hdd (i.e. the second hitachi harddisk).

when i unplug the ide channel 1 slave (the second hitachi harddisk) and boot then, the dvdrecorder is recognized without problems at /dev/hdc

this ends up in letting me
either see the dvdrecorder
or see the second hitachi disk

which is not satisfactory.

does anybody know how to circumwent such a problem?

any hint is much appreciated. thank you very much for your kind attention.

suomi
