Unhappy Suse 9.2 constantly hangs during install

Hello,

I am desperately trying to install Suse 9.2 onto my laptop via cdrom, however the install process just randomly hangs.
Sometimes it hangs when formatting the hard dis, sometimes when installing the files, sometimes when doing the post install setup.
I must have tried a dozen times or more now.
Suse tech support are a total and utter waste of space and wont help me.......maybe someone here can ??

Scott.

hmmm. have you tried to run the setup with 'safe settings' i.e. disabled ide-dma, acpi=off, nopcmcia=true etc. ?

what kind of hang is it? kernel panic or just a frozen system ?

Hi,

I have tried all available settings and two differant cd rom drives , but the result is the same.
It always results in a frozen system never a kernel panic

I was running SuSE 9.1 flawlessly on my Acer Aspire 1301XV then downloaded the DVD image for 9.2 this week. Both copies of the DVD I burnt from this image verify. I have tried:
1) updating - seemed to work then started to hang after reboot. The initial problem I had was that the caching name server was not replaced so the initial update failed to resolve host names - so I was running on the kernel installed from the DVD.
2) clean install without safe settings (hangs at random stages - including formatting and earlier and later).
3) manual install from network from http://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.2 (same as above) just in case.

It would seem that the kernel on the 9.2 DVD does not suit all laptops. I shall have to re-install 9.1.

Sorry, I meant to mention that I have tried "install (safe settings)" about half a dozen times - always freezes.

I have tried the latest 9.2 bootdsk and modules floppy images (22-Dec-2004) rather than the DVD iso (22-Oct-2004) that I had used before. My Acer Aspire 1301XV still freezes during package download/install - I only tried once.

I am re-loading 9.1 (from bootdsk and modules) and apart from having to chuck a dodgy floppy disc and start again, so far so good...

I havn't got 9.1 anymore, but that installs fine, so Novell have definately broken something in 9.2 , I guess this is called progress.
Well like I said no more Linux for me !!.

I completed the FTP install and update of SuSE 9.1 and everything is working fine again. I agree with rtspitz - Houston we have a Windows.

(In support of that statement, Windows XP won't drive much of the hardware on one of my PCs that Windows ME supported without 3rd-party drivers including HPT-366 EIDE and Adaptec SCSI)
