Suse 10.1 black screen after installation on Samsung X20 laptop with ATI X700

Hello everybody,

I've been trying to install Suse 10.1 on my Laptop the last couple of days and it just won't work. Maybe somebody here can help.

I have a Samsung X20 laptop that uses a ATI X700 mobility (128MB) graphics card with a screen that usually runs a 1400x1050 resolution.
My problem is that after I reach the end of the installation process my screen just goes blank and there is now way to even start Sax2 from the console (always blank screen).
I think that the problem occurs because Suse uses the wrong settings in the xorg.conf and wrong screen information.
Maybe somebody is using the same laptop with Suse 10.1 or can help me find the correct settings during the installation process? I've tried a couple of times with different settings but I always get a blank (black) screen afterwards.
I've tried almost all the solutions that I found doing a google search but it seems that nobody else has this problem.
It would be really helpful if somebody could post the initial settings so that I would at least get a GUI after the install to download the ATI proprietary drivers and use them.

Thank you for your help.

Sascha

Unfortunately ati graphics cards have a few setup problems during installation, thankfully it is something that can be fixed fairly easily. The following steps will get basic 1024x768 graphics up and running, the advanced driver installation you would need to follow the linux drivers installation from www.ati.com.

1) Turn on the computer and on the boot menu highlight SUSE, press F2 to bring up the boot options and type the number 3, then press enter.
2) When the screen comes up login as root.
3) Next type the following without quotation marks "mcedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf"
4) Scroll down the new screen till you see DEVICE and "Radeon". Replace "Radeon" with "vesa", then save and exit.
5) Reboot by typing without quotation marks "reboot", and let it boot normally into SUSE. You should now have a working gui. Go to www.ati.com to get the latest drivers for your machine and install following ati instructions.

GUI still doesn't work

Thank your for your quick reply.
Unfortunately I can't get it to work this way.
I've made the changes but Suse won't start the GUI.
Any other ideas ?

Sascha
