SUSE 10.0 (eval dvd) DNS's not resolved after starting X
Just a niggle because everything else I'm using SUSE 10.0 (eval DVD) works 100% perfectly.
I couldn't get DNS's resolved automatically with my router and DHCP although I could ping anything on the internet network and local IP addresses on the network were all reachable before starting X. (I use KDE desktop but start at run level 3 - so I manually start X)
This was definitly a KDE problem because pinging after starting X wouldn't even reach the router (Mine's set like most people's to 192.168.1.1).
Didn't make any difference whether firewall was set OFF or ON.
OK so I set the DNS's manually (got those from the ISP so no big deal but just a niggle).
Pity really about that as everything else 100%.
Loading XINE, LIBDVDCSS and XINE-UI from the Brazilian site enabled DVD playing perfectly (uninstall KAFFEINE and XINE libraries from the initial install first) including DVD-RAM discs as well as normal commercial DVD's.
Online update is fine as well.
After Online update a niggle I've often had with SUSE is that I couldn't get my nice large LCD monitor to use it's full resolution --works a treat now.
If you've got trouble with the OSS install I'd recommend a switch to the EVAL DVD. There's some misunderstanding here. It DOESN'T run out (i.e it's not a trial or time limited version). It's the same as the Boxed Retail set but without manuals and you have to get your own support from this (great) Forum and elsewhere.
I did try the OSS 10.1 Beta 8 which I liked (new KDE etc) but had to give it up because YAST would not work . I could get round many problems but YAST HAS TO WORK since installing a load of RPM's manually and then having to fiddle around with all the various dependencies just didn't seem worth the candle --although I'm not adverse to doing reasonable beta testing.
I think people will be more than happy with SUSE 10.0 eval version but before attempting to connect to the internet do set the DNS's of your ISP manually.
Cheers
