Mysterious size of Suse 9.3-Eval-Dvd.iso

Hi I am trying to download the DVD eval version of SUSE 9.3 from a winblows box (the one at work has the fast connection).

The reported file size for this is 4383158 KB or around 4.3Gb. However, whenever I try to download this file (from any mirror) I only get a file of size 188.9Mb.

To isolate whether it was a problem with my client not supporting large file downloads I have tried downloading with a range of apps:

Mozilla
Internet Exploder
Filezilla
Download Accelarator Plus

However, each time I only get the smaller file.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem is?

First of all, that sounds right about the size the FTP install image would be. Are you _SURE_ thats not what you are grabbing?

If not, if you let the download go for a while, does it keep going past that amount? Sometimes a client can't accurately tell the size, but thats not neccesarily a problem. Its just useful for telling you how long the download will take. Let the download run for a while and see if it keeps going past that size.

Hi bobcat05 !

Try this link it is fast : ftp://mirror.tv2.dk/pub/linux/suse/suse/i386/9.3/iso/
I download the Linux Suse 9.3 Pro DVD it
seem to be only 4,17/4.18 GB (4.488.353.792 byte) i use the firefox 1.04 : http://www.mozilla.org with a windows 32bit open source tool call TrueDownloader 0.82 : http://francis.dupont.free.fr/truedownloader/ with a extenstion call truedownloader 0.80 and this one call FlashGot 0.5.9.7 :http://www.flashgot.net/ Or you can use this tool call FTP Commander Free or if you want to buy the pro version i have not try it myself but it shut be the best and the fastste FTP downloader on the internet : http://www.internet-soft.com/ftpcomm.htm or http://www.tucows.com/preview/195124

This FTP client consists of two side-by-side local computer and FTP server panels. The latter contains a list of about a dozen pre-set FTP servers. To establish a connection, simply select the server and push the Connect button.

Users can execute two-way file exchanges and activate multiple downloads. It allows programs located on local disks to be run, and documents to be viewed. You can also delete, rename

and copy files; create and delete directories in the FTP server; and work in command-line mode. A session log file is also available.

Good Luck

Best regards
Suse91Pro

Hello. I had the same problem with suse 9.3 dvd. I tried downloading it from linux and windows and always got ethier 2.2gb file or 128mb. 128mb on windows and 2.2gb on linux. I just ended up geting the 5cd set. If you don't want to do that you can always get a torrent for suse 9.3 dvd off of torrentspy.com. I was doing that but I onl got speed around 80-90kb a sec and the 5cd set downloaded faster than the dvd would of. Was able to get speeds of 300kb a sec off of suse minor.

Again good luck

Best regards

Here is the release notes from the last 3 version :

Changes Log :

TrueDownloader v0.82 released (February 20h 2005)

-> Download Corruption of v0.8 totally fixed. Automatic resuming works well now.
-> Authentification system added for "Basic-Authentification" for HTTP.
-> New File Manager that allows downloading files > 2.1GB !
-> Supports more HTTP commands.
-> Username/Password saved for future downloads.
-> Fixed Uninstaller so that it removes Internet Explorer Integration;
-> GPL License information added to about box and setup
-> Various bugs fixed.
-> TrueDownloader Data Format (.dat) changed for huge file and future mirror support.
-> Added Swedish translation.
-> Thanks to Christian Schultz for his help and tests.

TrueDownloader v0.8 released (January 20th 2005)

-> Firefox and Mozilla extension fixed (no more annoying message box with your profile path)
-> Fixed HTTP & FTP proxies. Now they work without any problem. Socks 4 & 5 support is under development
-> Removed "DP" in some icons. -> Better resume detection. No more corrupted files because of some http server not supporting resuming -> Better handling of existing files and weird
URL format.
-> Added "Shut Down computer when done" and "Close connection when done" and tested them
-> Minor interface improvements.
-> Added support for text drag&drop on the basket, it will analyse the text and download all the urls that are in the text.
-> This allows to download simply a big list of URL at the same time without adding them one per one.
-> Other various bugs fixed.

TrueDownloader v0.8 released (January 2nd 2005) :

-> Introducing new download system using Winsock API instead of the Winsock Control allowing better control on speed and data.
-> New Mozilla and Firefox extension ! Autoinstaller from the program. Right-click catcher and Open with TrueDownloader in the Open/SaveAs window.
-> New Speed limiter available for non-segmented downloading (no point to use a segment downloading for speed when you want to limit the speed)
-> Better command line functionnality. You can launch a download from the command line even if an instance of DownloadPlus! is already running. Allows the use of TrueDownloader with DownloadWith program for Mozilla.
-> Fixed problem with program settings that would disappear.
-> Adding a "Download Recovery" system. If the download couldn't be finished for some reason ( webserver is down or TrueDownloader! can't finish the FTP download for some reason ), the program can try to build the file.
-> Now the program retries 3 times to download before it pauses (when the server is down)
-> Now the program resumes alone (normally :)
-> Added Resume Download (not Resume All only)
-> Fixed one problem with weird URL with "?*/+" that would crash the program.
-> Low/Middle/High priority for each download.
-> Better TimeOut detection.
-> Detection of %[Code] in URL.
-> Some minor things and bug fixes

I think the problem is that the server does not support transfer of files >2GB via the FTP protocol. A solution could be to use rsync for transfer or to download the ISO-split that some of those server offer. The three files can be fused together after download.

EDIT: from the EVAL Readme:
Code:
Other tips to help your download
================================

Downloading large files

Downloading large files such as iso-images soemtimes causes
problems. Here are some tips how to avoid them:

 * We strongly suggest using a downloadmanager or a ftp client
   that supports reget. In case of download problems the reget
   function allows to continue a download made earlier rather
   than having to start over again.
 * Some proxies are configured to not allow ftp acces - please
   download from a http mirror instead, if you are using such
   a proxy
 * When downloading the DVD ISO make sure your proxy and/or
   your download client support files larger than 2 GB

Plus, that way assumes that one is running windows. Being that this is "linuxquestions.org" its fair to assume that the majority of us are not

No one disagrees. I guess we all appreciate your effort. It's just not the only possible solution.

Use filezilla

http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla

Run the setup. Then start the program. In the quick connect toolbar at the top, type mirrors.kernel.org in the address area and hit the quick connect button. Then browse (right click>open) to the /suse/i386/9.3/iso/ directory and there you'll find the SuSE-9.3-Eval-DVD.iso file. Right click and chooze download.

I Am downloading at the mo and it's got passed the184mb mark.

Got this info from another forum so dont know whether its the prog or that particular download link
