Remote access to SUSE linux desktop suddenly ceases

Hi. I have a Dell Precision 360 running SUSE 10.1 linux. While I sometimes use the machine locally, I enjoy the ability to ssh into it from my laptop whether at the office or at home. Today, at some point, while trying to ssh in using cygwin, I got the 'connection timed out' message. On the machine, I could ssh localhost just fine. When I ping the machine, I get a 'request timed out' message. Although I haven't had a chance to check yet, would there be any reason why the firewall settings would magically change such that this would happen? Anybody have a clue as to what might be going on? All I did today was mess with some flexnet license settings on some unrelated software and reboot the system. I never touched anything related to the network.

Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Problem was with the firewall

Hey Guys, figured out the problem. I went into yast and checked the firewall settings, which allowed ssh. Good so far. I decided to stop the firewall temporarily. Clicking on the button did nothing. Below it there is a 'restart firewall' button which I clicked. THEN I clicked on 'stop firewall', and it promptly did. It appears that some file got corrupted so that the firewall hung even on reboots, but restarting the firewall corrected the problem. So now the firewall is restarted, I can ping the system and ssh into the machine without problems. I have added to the system a miniature sock monkey sitting on the monitor to watch over the machine to prevent further mishaps. I suggest you do the same.
