Red Carpet - Exchange - SuSE 9.2 Pro

That's as comprehensive a thread title as I can create for this question. I'm running 9.2 Pro. My employer has installed an Exchange 2003 Server for mail/calendar/etc. Evolution is installed on my machine. According to the information on the Novell site, the MS Exchange Connector is automatically installed with Evolution, rather than being a separate, purchased license and add-on. However, I don't see Exchange as an option when setting up a new account in Evolution. I tried a separate download of the Connector from the SuSE site, but it won't install because it can't find the Evolutions development libraries.

Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

You need to install the package using YaST2 (ximian-connector IIRC). Do a search for Evolution and see what comes up.

Thanks for the suggestion, Seb. YaST under SuSE 9.2 returns no package on a search for any of the following: "red carpet", "rcd", "ximian-connector". A search on "connector" does generate a list, but they are obviously for other programs than Evolution.

Surprising that no one on this forum could provide guidance. That doesn't happen too often. But I did find the solution on the SuSE Linux Forums (forums.suselinuxsupport.de). BTW, the current SuSE site at Novell.com does not point to this excellent support link and provides no user-driven support of its own, as far as I've been able to find.

There are several posts (at the suselinuxsupport site) complaining that 9.2 doesn't offer the Red Carpet daemon (rcd) in its installation package. This has certainly been my experience with 9.2 Pro. WIthout Red Carpet, getting an installable version of ximian-connector is very difficult. The FTP files at Ximian's part of the Novell site don't offer a version matching my Evolution version (2.0.1 at the time). Everything I pulled down said dependencies requiring 2.1 were missing. But Evolution 2.1 was not among the available downloads! Go figger!

Bottom line: I found a link to http://mirror.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirror...ub/redcarpet2/ in one of the posts, which also had other good info. Once I could pull and run the rpm, the rest was easy: subscribe to the ximian-connector channel and run the update. My Evolution now at a working level not available directly from Novell's SuSE site for 9.2 Pro. Red Carpet is in place, as is the connector for linking to an Exchange server.

To say I'm disappointed with Novell would be an understatement. FC is looking better and better!

End of story. 'Til next time ...

Thanks!

I installed all these from your link:

libredcarpet-2.4.5-0.ximian.10.1.i586.rpm
libredcarpet-python-2.4.5-0.ximian.10.1.i586.rpm
libredcarpet-tools-2.4.5-0.ximian.10.1.i586.rpm
rcd-2.4.5-0.ximian.10.2.i586.rpm
rcd-devel-2.4.5-0.ximian.10.2.i586.rpm
rcd-modules-2.4.4-0.ximian.10.1.i586.rpm
red-carpet-2.4.4-0.ximian.10.1.i586.rpm
rug-2.4.4-0.ximian.10.1.i586.rpm

Then I did the following:

sudo /etc/init.d/rcd start
and
sudo /usr/bin/red-carpet
joined channel, downloaded connector, and then edited the mail account in evo and I am now seeing GAL and folders.

Thanks again

Glad to hear that the information was useful. I had to do the installation under SuSE 9.3 Pro, also. It worked as well there as with 9.2.
