last night i auto-updated SuSE and now it does not boot correctly there were no errors reported but KDE does not start. I have to manualy start KDE and that does not start correctly either.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so why has it happened and how do I resolve the problem without reinstalling the system as well
KDE the GUI interface does not start an start up you have to invoke it frome the comand line when it starts it does not start up in the normal way all i can describe it is it starts in a "silly way" there are green lines arround the descktop and KDE menu bar windows as if it has not built it corectly just like you had started a stand alone program (ie Yatsy with the windows frame around it) you can move the desktop around the screan and place it where ever you want it, the bar along the bottom can be placed where you want it you can minimise all the windows (ie the desktop menu bar ect...)
It is like it is a "developers mode" so that you can place things where you think they would best go.
Sound really silly I know but very anoying, next time I have loaded it i will get a screan grab if i can.
This did not happen the last time I did an Auto update so it must be something new
Any Ideas?
I am writing this after a few beers and will not be back till after the weekend but I do not want to have to reinstall the system again!!! So please let me know if there is an easy way around this
Are you sure it is KDE at all? To me it sounds more like another windowmanager. Check /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager and /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager, if KDE is still set as default.
From command-line, you would login as root and type something like 'pico /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager'. This will open the editor pico and allow you to view and change the file.
In 'windowmanager', DEFAULT_WM="kde" and in 'displaymanager', DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm" is what you should see as KDE user.
