I have Suse 9.1 with Apache 1.3.14, MySQL 3.23 and PHP 4.0.4. I need to upgrade to PHP 5. I don't want any trouble because my server is hosting an important website. So I need extensive help on safely upgrading PHP.
This is just my two cents, but I would recommend a newer suse for you.
Im quite sure php5 will work correctly if you get it installed. There may be problems finding rpms, yes you can compile, but after that im quite sure, configs are in different places than in number4.
If you really really want to update, you should uninstall the old php4 packages. After that install php, apache-php5, php-mysql, ...
Suse 9.1 is using also an "old" apache 1.3. Im quite sure it will work just fine, but a safer choice would be newer Suse with apache2 (httpd). I would also update MySQL to atleast version4.
SUSE10 for example offers you apache 2.0.54 and php5 packages on the DVD.
Thanks a lot. I will take your advice in the next few days.
I have currently download php 4.3.8 and installed it. I have restarted the apache server but when running phpinfo it reports I'm still using the old php version. What shall I do?
Hmm. These little problems are just the ones that will pop-up if you don't remove the old version before the process.
Use command "rpm -qa | grep php" and check if it lists two versions of php or some updated and some old. Look carefully for apache2-mod_php4 and php4 (the base package) .
I myself have sticked with the php4, because I haven't found any new features I need in the php5. OK, it has got a way much better handling of object-oriented programming, but still I don't really need them yet.
I still recommend you to make a new server with suse10 or wait till March to get the new suse 10.1.
Installing lamp is basically the same procedure than in suse 9.1.
Install Apache and apache-prefork, edit runlevels for apache, enable server support in firewall.
Install php and apache-mod-php.
Install MySql and other dependencies , edit runlevels, make MySql default databases.
Restart computer
TEST!
