Path to a share folder, how???

Hello friends,

im linux newbie and im trying to build a small cluster using suse 11 and run in parallel fortran by using MPI. I ve made all the preperation (network communication, ssh, sharing using samba etc). I can access the pc's through network, either with their IP's or their hostnames.

Now i have to define in one pc (master node) a path to a shared folder where all other clusters will have full access. Usually in windows we can do this by using something like \\hostname\sharefolder_name. This haven't work in linux

When i access the folder from another pc i.e through nautilus the path is smp:/hostname/sharefolder but i can't use such a path because i think don't recognize the smp:/ .

Is there any way to define universal paths where the clusters will look for them in the network?

thx in advance for any help

You can share a folder via many mechanisms smb (samba-- windows file sharing) and nfs are just two, you should be able to setup either of those and make a shared folder, but they DO require setup and by default neither is setup.

hallo

thx for the reply. i had used samba to share folders between the linux machines. I share them with samba server with the options browseable=yes, inherit permissions=yes, write ok=yes, guest ok=yes, read only=no.

Then i temporary mount the share folder to a client machine by using the command

mount -t cifs uid=1000 //hostname/share /path_to/mount and it works fine i can access the directory

But .... i dont have write permission to the mounted folder ??? and this is strange because i have defined the read-write permissions in the samba server and im the owner of the mount folder (uid=1000)

Any ideas??

thx in advance

For sharing between Linux systems, NFS is a better choice than Samba which is aimed at sharing to Windows systems.

yes you are probably right. i will test nfs also because i have a lot of problems with samba shares. Now after changing smb.conf in the samba server machine im able to write files in the mount share folder from the client but im not able to modify the already existing files and im not able to modify any new file that is created in this folder!!!!
