I have just gotten everything the way I want it in XP and now I'm ready to put SuSE 9.3 on it. During the setup process I thought it would be a good idea to setup the windows on the first partition, then have a documents and stuff partition on fat32 cause the NTFS is untrustworthy, then I have a partition for the SuSE....
so I get to the part about partitioning and lo and behold it says I have to pick the first entry... where I have my windows just how I want it. It took days...
With hard drives being so cheap these days, I would install another one and then you do not have to worry about partitioning your original drive and messing Windows up.
No need to get another disk as I have one with 43 partitions 75% populated with installed distros.
Best way is to have the partition created first and tell each distro where to install. You only need one partition for one Linux but the first one needs an extra partition for Swap, which can be used by later distros if installed.
In the setup there is a choice along the lines of custom partitioning. Choose that. Then choose the partition set aside for SUSE. There should be an option there to format that partition. Choose the one you want (Reisfer, ext3, ext2 etc). It should allow you to set it up on that drive. I've done that before.

The problem is the setup says I have to pick the first choice and the one I had picked for it was the last. I still don't have it setup yet.
You can "change" the Suse's choice by editing. If there is no partition left to mount "/" Suse has to accept your choice, otherwise it won't get installed! You can squeeze Suse's balls.
